Cambodia site visit tour by Tokyo members

Mid-January 2020, CLEARTH LIFE International Sales Department members from Tokyo went to Cambodia for our site visit.

We had a report from Taiwan members last time, however we would like to share our experiences as well with the different point of view this time.

▼Phnom Penh, Cambodia▼
① The best drink for the hot weather is …… Coconut water!?
② Enjoy bargaining at local market
③ Ordinary Life
④ Recommended restaurant & bar
⑤ Splendid buildings

① The temperature was 36 degrees Celsius!

During the 3 days we stayed, the average daytime temperature was 36 degrees Celsius and the climate was the opposite of January in Japan. Hydration and escape from the heat were essential conditions for us. When it comes to living, the locals say “Phnom Penh is so hot that we rarely walk outside. Even if we walk, it’s up to 5 min!!” It was really hot and humid.
What impressed us in Cambodia was the taste of coconut water. The coconut chilled in the cooler box was cut in front of us and juicy coconut water was poured into the cup by the juice stand lady. USD 1 for a cup full of fresh coconut pulp and water.

② The best part of local market is “Bargaining”

The last time we introduced the market for tourists called “Central Market”. This time, we would like to introduce the local’s kitchen called “Russian Market”.
The impression of the Russian Market is a “jack of all trades”. You can buy anything from meats and vegetables to daily necessities such as clothes, miscellaneous goods, equipment repairs. It’s a typical Southeast Asian market where you can eat snacks as well whenever you feel hungry. Items were placed in a narrow space and overflowing items were hung up. The day before, we were told by our local tour guide, “There is no fixed price. Negotiate from half the seller’s asking price!”.
We tried and trophy items were… USD 10 for 2 tote bags (USD 15 for 2 tote bags before negotiation), USD 4 for 2 coasters (USD 4 for 1 coaster before negotiation). If you negotiate well, Buy 1 Get 1 FREE!?

③ Living environment in Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia is undergoing rapid development and its young and abundant labor force supports its development. Not all people who work in Phnom Penh live in the city. Many of them live in the suburbs and come to work to the city, so motorbikes and Tuk-tuks are handy to commute as a transportation.
Although Khmer is the official language, there are many Chinese people living there, so Chinese and English language can be heard in the city as well.

④ Recommended restaurant & bar

Khmer cuisine is ethnic like Thai and Vietnamese, so it’s up to you whether you like them. (All of us enjoyed, though.) When it came to Italian and Chinese cuisine, it tasted as good as its home country. There are many stylish restaurants and bars for us to enjoy, one of them is “Sora Sky Bar” in Rosewood Phnom Penh, the Vattanac Capital Tower which is the Phnom Penh’s landmark building. It was busy with the tourists, however the place is also loved by the locals and expats to relax after work. It was very interesting place to compare the luxury of the bar with the hustle and bustle of the city.

⑤ Splendid buildings in this emerging country

While there are many roads under maintenance or construction in Phnom Penh, many of the buildings are high-rise and splendid which made us surprised by the gap.
In particular, a building called “Arc de Triomphe in Cambodia”(left photo below) is gigantic and the writer is in the photo, but as you can see, it is as small as a grain of rice compared to the building. In fact, if you witness this building, you will surely be overwhelmed by its size.
Our CLEARTH LIFE’s first overseas property, EAST VIEW RESIDENCES (hereinafter “EVR”) has completed in 2019 in Phnom Penh. Many of these high-rise condominiums are currently under construction, and it is easy to imagine that the city will become even more vibrant in the near future once the buildings are completed and the flow of people changes.
